After seven years serving the state of New Mexico under the capacity of public education secretary, Hanna Skandera announced that she would be quitting this position. However, she tried her best to change the education sector in the State of New Mexico with odds stuck against her. For instance, New Mexico is America’s poorest state, and she was under constant criticism. People who criticized her work on a regular basis included the teacher’s unions in the state and the Democrats within this state. This came as a surprise to many critics and was announced to the public by Lida Alikhani who is the spokeswoman for the public education department in the state. However, despite stepping down, the outgoing public education secretary maintained that she still loves the state of New Mexico and she would be willing to help the education sector in the future.
She will resign on 20th June and her deputy Christopher Ruszkowski will take the position. This was announced by the governor of the state of New Jersey Susana Martinez. She praised the outgoing public education secretary saying that she left the students and schools in a better position thanks to her leadership. Among the things that she will be remembered for is her strong stand while dealing with teachers unions. The major reason why she was scrutinized by teachers unions and Democrats is her former involvement with the State of Florida under Jeb Bush as the secretary of education. During her time in the state of Florida, her greatest achievement was introducing a new grading system.
When she moved to the state of New Mexico, she sought for the same reforms. She did not do well with the Democrats as they stalled her appointment for a record of four years. This meant that she managed the department of education as a designate. However, she was confirmed into the job in the year 2015. As for the teacher’s unions, they fought her for introducing a teacher evaluation system in the state.
