It’s been well known for many years that George Soros has been very generous with his fortune, but in October 2017 it was revealed just how generous. He gives his money to Open Society Foundations, his philanthropic organization, where it is used to fight for human rights, the democratization of nations, and other good causes. He’s now revealed that over the last several years he has transferred $18 billion to this organization which now occupies the second spot on the biggest American philanthropic organizations (second only to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). Another consequence of these gifts over the years to Open Society Foundations is that it puts him at the heart of the political and social upheaval that has been occurring in the United States in recent years, in particular making him once again criticized by conservative critics who don’t agree with his goals.
Open Society Foundations is involved in over 120 countries, with the United States becoming an increasing focus in recent years. Among the particular policies his foundation supports are those that protect gays and lesbians. The people at Open Society Foundations are also working to address police brutality and abuse, particularly against minorities. They also, for example, helped out when Ebola broke out in 2014 by providing money to open treatment centers for the disease. When the 2016 presidential election resulted in hate crimes happening across America his organization upped its financial commitments to stop this violence from spreading any further.
At the end of 2017 Open Society Foundations will change its leadership when Patrick Gaspard, now the vice president of the organization, becomes its president. When he talked about the results of the 2016 election he said that it had galvanized him and the team at this organization to work even harder to push back against those in the United States who don’t respect human rights and dignity. He added that Trump’s new commission that was set up to investigate voter fraud has a complete lack of integrity or honesty to it. The work that George Soros and Open Society Foundations do to guarantee equal access and protection of rights is more focused than ever for them.
George Soros made his money managing a hedge fund in New York since the early 1970’s. He is from Hungary and during his youth this country was both occupied by Nazis and under communist rule. He was able to escape Hungary and first ended up in the U.K. where he earned his college education. After this he emigrated to America.
The extreme right and Republican’s have been critical of George Soros and have gone so far as to demonize his philanthropy. Seemingly every movement that arises in the United States, such as Black Lives Matter, is credited to him. They even accuse him of providing the funding for events such as the white nationalist rally that took place in Charlottesville, accusing him of having done so in order to start a false-flag movement. The reality is George Soros is not involved in many movements and the ones that he is are designed to support human rights.
