In August 2017, Michael Burwell was selected as Chief Financial Officer at Willis Towers Watson. Willis Towers recognized Burwell as a fitting replacement for Roger Millay, who officially retired from the post in October. Burwell brings a wealth of experience gained in various roles within the professional financial services industry, for a total of 31 years. Prior to joining Willis, he served as COO, CFO and Head of Global Transformation and Head of Transaction Services for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). In addition to his career diligence in executive leadership positions; Burwell has also acquired 11 years of experience in auditing and 12 years in advisory services.


John Haley the Chief Executive Officer for Willis Towers Watson mentioned that Willis Towers Watson was expecting to evolve and progress in the future following the appointment of Michael Burwell. After the selection, Burwell added that he was excited to join the organization, stating, “I look forward to contributing to the success of the company.” Beginning in 1828, Willis Towers Watson has garnered esteem in capital management, global advisory and broking services, and is now in 140 countries. In his role as CEO, Burwell not only brings his experience and executive leadership capabilities, he’s also a Certified Public Accountant.


When asked to comment on the best advice he provides for mentees, Michael Burwell didn’t hesitate to emphasize the relevance of building key relationships within your given industry. He stated that it’s important to develop both interpersonal and personal relationships, for business related purposes. Keeping in line with this invaluable advice, he went further to add that ultimately building these networks yields benefits. He pointed out there’s a potential connection in every contact with team members and colleagues. And it’s important that persons in leadership positions should never devalue what is “communicated” to them. Within these networks, he said that there’s a potential client connection, so listen closely.


Michael Burwell attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In his spare time, Burwell is an avid golfer and he regularly contributes written articles on a variety of topics for publication.
