George Soros has made a name for himself in the political arena over the past several decades. The billionaire investor has become one of the most prominent political activists in the world thanks to his focus on core democratic values and his willingness to open his pocketbook in order to make sure that those values are heard. George Soros is the founder of the Soros Hedge Fund as well as one of the most generous philanthropic endeavors of all time: the Open Society Foundations. George Soros is a progressive voice and one of the few billionaires willing to stand up and stare the threat of Donald Trump right in the face.
George Soros returned to politics much like a phoenix rising up from the ashes. For the past two decades George Soros has been operating on the sidelines, largely focusing on developing grassroots political efforts in order to give the American people more of a say in their local and national government. The last time that Soros spent big money in order to try and get involved in a national election was when he backed Al Gore’s campaign run against George W. Bush. Now, Soros is once more getting back into the fight thanks to the rise of the blowhard reality TV show candidate, Donald Trump.
George Soros and Donald Trump could not differ more unless it was opposite day. George Soros jumped into the political realm in order to back Hillary Clinton as well as the rest of the progressive nominees up and down the ticket. Soros knew that there was simply too much going on and too much at stake to sit this election out. He didn’t want to be someone who sat idly by when he had the ability to make a change. So, Soros would leap in and bring nearly $25 million in donations to Clinton and other Democrats making their political runs. These donations largely went to immigrant rights groups, voting rights groups, and minority protections PACs while also giving to Clinton’s own political action committee.
Born and raised in Hungary, George Soros saw first hand what dangerous nationalism could do to a country and to the people living within it. In 1944, when Soros was just a boy, his country was invaded and summarily occupied by the Nazis. Over the following year nearly half of million Hungarian born Jews would be murdered for their background. Soros and his family, after saving many people, would be forced to flee to London. In London Soros would study the philosophy of Karl Popper and turn it into what makes him tick today. Now, Soros is focused on making as big of a change as possible in this world with the time and money at his disposal.
